Good afternoon Mister Shamal

Sunday, February 21, 2010

“The Shamal is a very rare wind, and Dubai is definitely a light air venue”. That’s what the locals say.

Well, the members of the RC 44 Class are starting to wonder if it is really true because this warm offshore wind always blows when the RC 44’s are in town. Today’s practice session was no exception: the Shamal was blowing at 15-20 knots and the swell was fairly big, even impressive at times!
According to the forecast, the Shamal should carry on blowing tomorrow, perhaps easing a bit in the afternoon. “It usually lasts for there days”, say the experts. And it started today!
Needless to say that the event looks promising and that tomorrow’s match race session will be a hot one.
All the teams went out practcing today. Some were concluding a week long training session, for example the Spaniards, whereas others still had a big learning curve. Adam Minoprio and his Black Match Racing Team, for example, only had three days to discover the boat and find the right modes. “We’re fine”, said Minoprio. “We trained well and we are ready.”
The racing will start immediately after the skippers briefing, scheduled at 10:00 AM.
